Who are you?

I think fundamentally everyone knows the answer to that question, but there are a lot of layers that accumulate over time which confuse us and cause us to ignore the truth about ourSelves.  From the time we are born we are conditioned by our parents, society, school, friends, religion, higher education and everything else we come into contact to–all of whom want to define us according to their needs.  But we all know deep down what our purpose is and what will make us truly happy and fulfilled.

The people who are Great in this life–those who achieve and flourish and inspire–are the people who have aligned themselves to their true purpose (either intentionally or instinctively).

Is it as simple as an honest self-evaluation?  Yes and no.  The first step is looking at yourself and recognizing the truth.  The second step is where real courage is required:  standing up to everyone else around you who has defined you into a corner and BEING who you are, even in the face of ridicule, anger, betrayal, and laughter.  I believe the most unhappy people in the world are those who live in this purgatory of knowing their true selves and not living it.

  • This really hits me. Your last paragraph is so true. I feel that sometimes I am backed into a corner and am to fearful to let my true colors shine.

  • I wonder how much greatness has been lost because people have done what was “easy” instead of honoring their true self?

Sometimes I wonder how much of myself I’ve lost, trying to be someone else for everyone else.

  • “The first step is looking at yourself and recognizing the truth.”

The beauty of that is that it can take a lifetime to recognize one’s truth, because there is usually more than one truth in play at a time. Its a constant focus, a game, and it never ends… and why should it? That’s why people give up and just become who they think people want them to be – its easier to run with the flock than to really see/feel/be who we are.

  • The third step is the really tricky one though – once you’ve seen the truth and then found the courage to move toward it – actually making change it something that could take forever to accomplish.

  • Wow..such truth on that last sentence. I am just now making my way to where and who I am. I just had to figure out who I am…now I know what direction to go, so that is a huge step forward.

That really makes me think when I read that last sentence. I am so glad I didn’t keep trying to be what I thought I “should” be.
