Ego

I used to worry that I wasn’t doing enough to destroy my ego.  I was concerned that I needed to be  doing something to dismantle my self so that I could mature and grow as a person.  But I realize now how unnecessary (and egotistical) that was.

Because if you pay attention to life, and if you live earnestly, you will have no choice but to watch your ego slowly dissolve in the acid of defeat, conflict and rejection.  You ego will, in the course of everyday existence, be reminded of its own powerlessness and shrivel up.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that unless you are actively protecting your own ego, its gradual destruction is an inevitability and a natural part of human life as we progress from youth to old age.

The key to personal growth then, is to simply witness without denial and accept the subsequent pain as necessary.

So, so true. I think ego can also die through growth which isn’t necessarily rejection or sadness, just by paying attention. <3

  • I do think it’s a natural process (unless you’re an ass) to become less interested in one’s own ego as you get older. All the stages of adulthood – marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood – they all break down just that little bit more of one’s ego.

  • Our focus changes as we grow older, even those who to not go through marriage, children, and grandchildren. When we’re young the world is about us, as we age the world becomes a larger place and we spend more time focusing outside of us.
